My backyard is a beach. And although we don’t have a sea view I can take 20 steps out my back gate and I’m there!
Once there I can smell the sea and look out across a broad, sandy beach towards Kapiti Island. (One hour north of Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city.)
And today as is often the case, there’s a blustery, cool breeze from the north-west which serves to blow away the cobwebs.
There’s a sweet story behind purchasing this 1960s run-down beach house.
It was an impulsive action by my soon-to-be husband to fulfil one of my dreams. I often remind him that it’s the best gift I’ve ever received in my life. 🙂
But it’s what we’ve done since to enable us to live here full-time which did not happen by impulse.
Rather it’s evidence of our approach to creating a life where we get to live our dreams.
Here I share the 3 critical steps that enabled us to live our dream.
I love freedom!
And that means creating possibilities and making the most of choices.
But that relies on being good at:
- Seeing what's possible
- Believing it’s achievable
How to do that?
The starting point is to understand what matters.
You can do this by asking yourself:
- What you stand for?
- What impact do you wish to have on the world?
- What values do you wish to live your life by?
Me, I believe in…
So how did those values get us to where we are today, living our dream at the beach?
1. We chose to live simply
Our home is one-bedroom, My home office is our old camper van. Our Airbnb cottage, which helps produce income, is also our guest room.
2. We visualised our future.
Then we made decisions that followed a loose roadmap.
But more importantly, creating a clear vision means decision-making can happen subconsciously. This brings the visualisation to life with less stress. (This subconscious decision-making is why visioning exercises are so powerful.)
3. We care more about what we think, not others.
We are clear about what’s important to us and less influenced by what others might think. The outcome is that we live a simple life that’s good for my mental health and our wellbeing.
The best time is now!
This is a perfect time to turn inward and rediscover what matters to you.
The world is going to be different so what better time to create new possibilities and pivot your life.
Dream, learn and then plan.
